Introduction, idea

The main concept of the houses in the planned area is to play with the proportions of the buildings, while at the same time exposing their wooden facades.

Facade composition is based on two harmoniously contrasted materials, darker and lighter wood and joining accent detail. Siding is choosen to be 140mm and 35mm wide. Accent is 10 mm thick galvanized metal skearting around lighter boards.

Darker boards will act like calm background, in which lighter boards with windows form balanced composition.

Differnt buildings use same composition principles but are carried out with adjusted proportions according to building sizes.

Masterplan

All the planned buildings are located in the specified area. The terraced houses are partioned to avoid the monotony of the block. All the terraced houses have balconies and separate storage rooms. The area around the houses is landscaped with taller trees in larger spaces and lower landscaping between the houses.

Parking facilities have been solved with underground garage that provides greater security and leaves the street area for pedestrians.

Apartment building

The apartment buiding is designed as a 3-storey buiding with 24 apartments alltogether. The areas of the apartments vary from 49 to 82 square meters. All the 1st floor apartments have terrasses. There are 6 apartments on every floor. Higher flats all have balconies facing east, south or west. The net height of the apartments is 2.65 m.

The main entrance is located on the north side of the building. The stairs and the elevator are connected with an underground floor parking space. In addition, bicycle parking spots and storerooms for every apartment are planned on the underground floor.

The bearing structure of the building is wooden. The outer walls are divided into modules of 4 and 2. The building has a flat roof and therefore in-house rainwater drainage system is planned.

Exterior finishes include wooden boardings of different treatments and profiles.

The keywords for the architectural idea of the terraced houses are strucutre and proportions. In this work a modern alternative and a new standard solution to a typical Norveigan terraced house is proposed.

When designing a terraced house, partitioned facades are important to avoid a dull wall. To create different structures and rythmes we have used different boarding profiles and treatments. In addition the terraces are displaced a little bit to make the street view more attractive.

The terraced house boxes are divided into different types. The are types with gable roofs and flat roofs. Dormer windows are added to the gabled types to use the attic floor more effectively and give a little more excitement to the roof landscape. Much attention is given to the proportions of and the placement of windows.

The terraced houses are planned as element houses, which makes it easy to build. Different architectural techniques are used in the facades of different rowhouse types to make the quarter more diverse.

Theres a storage room that matches with the house planned in every frontgarden.

Finishing materials

The facades are covered with wooden boards that have different finishes and profiles.

Indicatively the type of wood should be spruce, pine or larch. Softwood is coverd with grey color as larch is exposed with natural finishing and protected with UV- resistant stain.

The gable roofs are coverd with grey colored metal sheets as the roof of the apartment building is covered with dark colored membrane.

All the window and door frames are wooden-aluminium construction and pained grey outside.

Constructions

The bearing structure of the building is wooden. The outer walls are divided into modules of 4 and 2.

Exterior finishes include wooden boardings of different treatments and profiles. The bearing structure for the underground floor is made from concrete.
